Hi there

I went BR in Oct 2005 and discharged May 2006. I have just been accepted for my first credit card since then (only £200 limit which is ideal to start credit building for me) and I wanted to open another bank account closer to home (my co-op is 60 miles away) so I can transfer just a little bit of money each week as a 'shopping account'. However, when applying online many banks ask if you are bankrupt. Am I classed as BR still or not? How long are you classed as BR for? Is it until the 6 years have passed when it should come off your credit reports?

Many Thanks

Vicky

You will always be a 'Discharged Bankrupt' so if a creditor asks if you have ever been BR then you will have to say 'yes'. This will be the case for the rest of your life and there is no end to this.

If a creditor asks if you are BR then, as you have been discharged, you can answer 'no'.

Hi Vicki

Sounds good with a new card... BUT be careful, it is only £200, but that can be used up very quickly...Then it needs to be paid back.

I have made it my intention never to have another debt in my life!

I understand about getting a normal bank account - although the Co-op is a great bank in my view.

Yes, if asked have you ever been BR... the answer is yes. If you are asked are you BR - the answer is No

I wish you well

There is no problem with having a credit card providing it's used responsibly. I have the Vanquis card and I pay it in full each month by direct debit, and to be honest it comes in useful at times.

Only when the last tree has died, the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.

Last IPA payment made on 28th June 2010 - it's over at last!

I applied for the Vanquis as it would really have come in handy but I was refused.

Strange how they accept some people but not others! The same goes for those just out of an IVA.

Buckle your seat belt Dorothy, 'cos Kansas is going bye bye.

I was very suprised to get any sort of credit card and I am happy with a £200 limit because it's a start. I just wanted it to buy a week or 2 of shopping each month then pay it back so I can show I am a good girl now I have definitly learn't my lesson and hopefully I can get my credit back to a good place so I can buy my first house in the (hopefully near) future
