My partner has an apointment at the court for bankruptcy on 16 Feb. We're worried about what to do till then as we're getting several letters and calls a day and don't know if someone may show up at the door. Any advice based on previous cases that could help us out? Should we tell the debt collection agencies etc that he has filed for bankruptcy or just keep our heads down and wait till BR?

Hi and welcome.

Don't worry about the calls, just tell them you are petitioning for bankruptcy and they can't threaten you with anything else!

You are only likely to have debt collection agencies call and you don't even have to speak to them if you don't want to.

Hang in there, not long to go now!

Hi jemima.my
Try not to worry about phone calls etc.
I know it is hard but as Kallis3 says, tell them what is happening, keep it short & brief & try to relax.
Your partner has made the BIG decision so try to think to the future & not the past.
You are at the right place for support & advice so keep in touch with everyone on here & ask for help whenever you need it.
Good Luck with the court date & keep us imformed.

you will get phone calls and letters BUT unless a creditor has already got a Court Judgement against you ( CCJ ) there is absolutely nothing that they can do as they do not have enough time

Thank you all, that does ease my mind. The phone calls I can handle as they're all automated anyway (we screen them on the answerphone), and similarly with the letters, but when we got a letter last week that said the debt had been passed to an agency that specialise in doorstep collections that really scared us. I've heard so many stories about people sticking their foot in the door and forcing their way in past. My partner works from home and he's sitting everyday with the curtains closed and the doors locked. A kid came round to pick up his mums avon catalogue the other night and we both jumped out of our skins!

Very much looking forward to this all being dealt with!

Visit this link to see what debt collectors and bailiffs can and cannot do:

Doorstep collectors can be ignored or sent away by telling them what you are doing.

It is highly unlikely that anyone will turn up though.

You must be feeling awful right now. I remember those times so well (2 months in to BR) & I am still slightly edgy when the doorbell rings unexpectedly (old habits....!)but feel I am getting better.
As has been said, it is highly unlikely that anyone call, we had numerous letters saying that the accounts had been passed on to firms that specialised in doorstep collections! No one ever turned up but was very scary at the time. One firm even sent a letter giving us a court date but when we phoned the court they had no knowledge of them or the case. Honestly, the things that these companies try to break us is ridiculous!!!

Good Luck & remember we are all here

Thank you all so much, you have definately put my mind at rest. It's been a tough time but it's so good to know that the light is at the end of the tunnel and we don't have to wait much longer to breathe a huge sigh of relief.

What a wonderful forum this is!
