Simply put... my former partner and I bought a house together on a Northern Rock together mortgage coupling all of her student debt and some of my debts into one apparently easy payment.
In February 2009 she did a moonlight flit and stopped all contributions to the mortgage and the joint debts (including a loan for her car and an overdraft). In July 2009 she declared herself bankrupt. There were complications and I have seriously struggled for the last two years. Some advice I had previously received suggested my only option was to go bankrupt - unfortunately my career is bankruptcy sensitive. I am now freelance (thus self employed) so even though the easiest option would be to go bankrupt it is not an option I wish to go down.
Northern Rock refuse to do anything with the mortgage without her permission but she has blocked all avenues of correspondence. I am left with a joint mortgage that she refuses to acknowledge and refuses to contribute towards.
See I am aware of the fact that joint debts are joint and severally liable, but the fact of the matter is I am convinced she used her position as an Examiner for the Official Receiver to gain an advantage - the details of her bankruptcy have been seriously editted on the Insolvency Register. I am convinced that she abused the position Bankruptcy procedure just to walk away from the relationship. I find it unfair that my job would be at risk yet she retained hers. More than that it sticks in my throat each month when I have to pay the mortgage and the joint debts. Surely there is some form of restitution I can seek? I have adopted £80,000 of her liabilities and I have to suck it up?
