Hello all.. I am going to bankruptcy court Wednesday (the only date available and had to make the day 3 weeks in advance). I only just realised this weekend that my paycheck for the month is paid on Thursday.
So my question is.. does the OR really freeze accounts on the day of bankruptcy? Or will it happen sometime soon after? My paycheck will go in at midnight on the same day I am in court, will that give me enough opportunity to use the money? I am borrowing £600 for the court fees and would like to use my paycheck to reimburse the family member... Plus it would be nice to have some money to eat and buy petrol in April...
Thanks,
Beth |

Hi,
You need to change your account as soon as possible. First Direct are well known for closing the accounts of those people who are bankrupt regardless of whether or not they are a creditor.
The Co-op come highly recommended.

Thank you Kallis. I have moved my paycheck to my partners account for Thursday. I am now setting up a new account for my direct debits. I have been a customer (and a good one at that) of FD for 12 years... I would have hoped for some leway.. but I'm not taking any chances.
thanks again... |

Unfortunately there will be no leeway, they and HSBC are notorious for doing it.
Glad you're getting a new account sorted and that your pay will be ok.
Good luck for tomorrow,

Hi Beth,
Wise move getting your pay into your partners account.
I banked with HSC and they were horrible to me. They wasted no time freezing my account and asked me to come into branch to withdraw my remaining funds.
I have set up a new account with the Co-op now but the problem I still have with that is that 3 weeks later I still have no debit card or PIN. I phoned hem up last week and they didn't seem concerned and said they'd get another one to me - still waiting! I have the bank account details though so I'm able to pay money in - just can't get it out with my debit card and the nearest branch is 30 mins driveaway to draw out csh in person.
Also when you do set up your new account, make sure your employer has your new details in time to pay you at month end. Mine didn't this month and so I've just had to pick up a cheque and that's now going to take several days to clear. I'm lucky my other half has some cash to lend me otherwise I'd be scuppered.
Good luck,
Widge x |

Thank you Widge, it helps to hear other's experience.
Cheers again Kallis, for info and support.. It is much appreciated.
Oh wow... and HSBC have been so good with me while I have been working my backside off keeping everyone happy.. Even giving me extra short term overdrafts when needed without too much hassle..
My money is going this month to my partner, sorted in the nick of time with work today. Phewww..
I have opted to open CardOne account.. mainly because I could do it online from home.. I live in the middle of nowhere.. no coop banks around here.. Still waiting for final info on it.. but now that I don't have to worry about my next paycheck for 4 weeks I should be okay...
Thanks guys.. |

Just in case you have any problems with the CardOne account, the Co-op cashminder account allows you a debit card and internet banking. They don't have a branch near me either, but work with the Post Office so you can pay in any cheques etc in any Post Office. Widge x |

Oh.. a post office account would be handy.. Did you have to go to a branch initially to set it up Widge? Or can you do that online too?
Cheers. |

You set up the account over the phone. They need certified copies of ID otherwise you'll have to go into branch to present the originals. Certified copies didn't cost me anything at the Post Office. Just take your originals (passport, driving licence, utility bill maybe) plus your copy to the PO and thy should check and certify. Just check with the co-op EXACTLY what information they want from the certifier (as tha slowed me down a bit). Widge x |

You can't do the cashminder online, only in branch or over the phone.
