Hi - I am having to look at the option of being declared bankrupt, but am worried that I may lose my job by doing this. I am a professional pilot, working for one of the larger airline companies in the UK. I have yet to make detailed enquiries, but would like some info before I start talking to them... does bankruptcy stop me from being able to obtain a security clearance to work at an airport - ie it allows me to go airside to do my job - and if I can still get a security clearance, am I obliged to tell my employer? Haven't checked out the forum for this question, but am I correct in thinking that this would be declared to my employer by a court? Many thanks. DE

Hi dme

couple of things to do first:-

1. check your employment contract and see what it says about insolvency.
2. make an annonomous call to HR and ask them ( don't use your extension number !!)

if it is not noted as a job exclusion then I can see no reason why there is a problem.

The only other thing that might raise an eyebrow is the changing of a tax code to NT. This stands for No Tax and effectively you would get paid ALL the tax that would normally go to the tax man and forward this to the Official Receivers agent monthly. This is for the duration of the current financial year.

There are several reasons why you might have a NT tax code and they don't all mean insolvency.

Incidentally if you went Br in Feb or March then the tax year has gone and not NT code is applied.

So far as I am aware, there are no restrictions upon airline pilots from going bankrupt, but as Paul says there might be some contractual reasons which might affect your ongoing employment. You might also want to check with the CAA to see if they are aware of any policies in this regard which would affect your security clearance.
