Hi,
Hoping someone may be able to advise me re my basic cashminder account & debit card i have with the co op bank,I opened this account when i started my IVA 17 months ago,& have found the d card invaluable to order groceries on line. I am off work long term after an accident in january & am only getting ssp every week which is paid into the above account, however i can no longer pay the IVA & it is set to fail end of this month (my IVA company have been informed), Iv'e decided to go bankrupt & want to know will the bank freeze my account when they hear of the bankruptcy?(iv'e heard the co op are BR friendly),will they let me keep the d card or will they close the account & let me open another with just a cash card?If they freeze the account even for a short time i'm up the creek without a paddle so to speak as i rely on my ssp for food, my partner's wage pays the rent, heating, keep the car on the road.thanx.

Hi,

As long as this account is not one of your creditors then you should be fine, they are very BR friendly.

Hi Holly,

You'll be fine.

I opened my account 2 hours after I went BR. The OR said provided you tell the bank you are going or have gone BR they have no interest in it.

I am in the same position to you regarding off work and SSP :/

Well Barclays dont seem to have shut my online banking down despite saying they would.

The only difference I find is that the co-op takes a few days to update so you need to be through with your figures. But that's a good thing for someone who s BR

It's good as some bills are still payed into barclays but as soon as it's sorted ill tell the bank manager where to shove his card ( looking forward to that!)

I was happy with the Co-op and I used to manage my money by using a spreadsheet to keep track of everything I spent.

Only when the last tree has died, the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.

Last IPA payment made on 28th June 2010 and I'm now looking forward to getting married in September 2012 - I'm proof that you can go BR and come out the other side.

I would leave it until afterwards - the OR will inform the bank that they have no interest in it.

I agree. The Impression I have got from the woman I speak to at the IS is that anything before the BR is included. They didn't ask for my new account details and have no interest in it because it was after the BR. They can of course ask to see it but I tell them whats in there.

In all honesty it doesent matter that much with the co-op account if you open before or after bankruptcy. Even if it is declared on the forms the OR will simply write to the bank and ask them to keep it open for you, They have a specific letter to do this and it happens every day of the week.

There is one exception which mainly applies to the barclays account. If you have debt with barclays they will give you another account but they are within their rights to setoff any money in your account on the bankruptcy date against their debt, so if you have debt with the bank best not to open an account with them until after the bankruptcy date

The only way you can contact someone off forum is if both parties agree and the administrator can pass on email addresses.

But that has its pitfalls.

Before I went BR I had a top current account with a bank but it was shut down because I didn't know Natwest and RBS were linked.

Now after the BR they refused to do anything.

What do you mean they refuse to do anything now that you are BR?

Agree - what are they refusing to do? If they were a creditor then the debt will be written off.
