I have been attempting to recommence paying my council tax. However my monthly payment has suddenly jumped to £91 from £64 due to being quoted only seven months left to pay instead of the nine i could pay over. Can this remaining balance for the 07/08 year be included in my list of creditors. I can't afford to be paying them for the next few weeks whilst i save up. Or am i better off paying them? What are the likely future consequences of the balance being added to my list of creditors? ie. next year will they demand full payment in one go? I should add I have only missed one payment in June. I have paid up until then without missing anything for many years.

I am not impressed by the manner in which they have treated me.

Hi there i work as a Council Tax Manager.
There are only 7 months left Council Tax is payable over 10 instalments from April to January. Not over 12 months.
When were you made Bankrupt??
I understand your frustration, but they are only acting within the law! - if you post a few more details, i can give you advice on what to do

thanks

I am not BR until August. According to my Council tax statement my dd payments were up to March 2009. Hence monthly payments of £64. Now they have magically reduced to 'all done' by January 2009. I have the statement with all the details on it. Incidentally I understood from many years ago the monies were not classed as outstanding until the end of the year in which they were payable. Not on the day the statement is issued. does this de facto mean that councils have chivvied up payments by up to a year???? Extra money in the pot???

And they want another £91 by 06/07 (for July) or else. Which i don't have anyway. Not until sometime next week. So perhaps I'll just let it go into the BR as well and stop trying to do the impossible.

Hi there
Absolutely not monies are actually due on 01/04 of each year, however you have 10 months to pay - there has never been anything which states that Ctax is due by 31/03 - if i had a pound for everyone who quoted that i could honestly say i would be a millionaire!!
I would give the council a call and say that you previously had instalments till march, and why has it changed?
I am very surprised that they gave you that - as the regulations clearly state 10 instalments!
to be honest most councils will use their discretion - but it is just that discretion - you would need to speak and plead your case and forgive me for saying this - be super nice - people are more likely to help if you do that than rant! (not stating that you ranted - just hypotehtically)
In response to BR - anything outstanding prior to bankruptcy should be included in your BR order. Most councils apportionthe debt once the order has been made. As Council Tax is a daily charge (payable in instalments) the daily charge for arrears up to the date of bankruptcy will be included in your order if not paid.
What stage are you at - have you only just been billed? or had reminders, where did the pay by 06/07 or else comefrom??

After the DD was not paid in june i got a letter saying the dd had failed and they wanted all the remainder of the year immediately - or to make an arrangement. There have been no other correspondence from them. I have only missed a monthly installment but they have been pretty savage in their correspondence. I received a final demand stating that i had to pay it all. I then contacted them with my new cashminder account details to recommence dd payments. I was then told as it was too late to set up and collect this by 6 july i would have to pay it manually then they would set up the dd. I have received confirmation of this saying if i don't pay by the 6th they will set collectors on me. Personally I think they are being a tad cavalier. And frankly I am beyond caring about it now. I am finished anyway.

If i was as nice to them as they have been to me perhaps i should go to their office and shout menacingly at them/ as they have done to me via post? Quid pro quo??

I work in housing and council tax benefits for a large city council.

I know that out council tax team will agree to 12 monthly instalments but if you miss any it reverts back to 10. I wander if this is what has happened.

Hi Tess121068. There was no special arrangemnet for 12 monthly payments it was how the information was presented on the original advice for the 2008/09 year. first dd of £54 or so then £64 thereafter through to March 2009.
