I plucked up the courage and phoned BCC today to find out if they do a drop-in service or if they operate on an appointment only basis. I was expecting to be told how irresponsible I was, or to be made to feel like a lower life form.
I was pleasantly surprised; the girl/woman who answered the phone had a very sympathetic voice (she actually sounded like Alice from 'the Vicar of Dibley') and explained things without any air of critisism.
The outcome was that Bristol operate on an appointment only basis, they currently have a 3-4 week waiting list with the next available appointment being 7th January 2009.
I would be very interested to hear the experiences of any Bristol people regarding the court and the OR so that I can be fully prepared.

Sorry i dont know anything about Bristol court so i cant help you.
May be some of the other members or experts have a better idea of that one.

You need to be there at 9.30 but suggest you arrive at 9.15 to make sure you are first in the queue.
Usually they go through the forms at the window ( unfortunately in earshot of everyone else) and the clerk is only going to check for gaps in the form.
They will ask you if you have lived at the address for the majority of the last 6 months, but if you have finished all the form there won't be any other questions.
You will be asked if you would like to swear your affidavit on the bible or prefer to swear an oath.
then you pay your £495 and get a receipt.
You will then be asked to return at 11.30 to collect yout Br order.
The OR will call probably the next day unless you are a sole trader or running a business.
The guys in Bristol are very nice and it is probably one of the easier courts in the country.
We are there around 8 times a month.

Thank you very much for your response, I am so much more at ease now. Can I pester you for a few clarifications?
You say 'return at 11:30 to collect the BR Order', does that mean that I don't go in to see the judge?
I am the director of a limited company. It is purely a vessel to operate as an IT contractor, so I am the only director, Myself and my wife are the sole shareholders, and we are both the only employees. I will probably be unemployed by the time I file for bankruptcy (probably moving to Ireland immediately after BR, but this will be the subject of more questions to the forum), and will have started the process of winding up.
How would this affect the OR process?

You probably won't see the judge at Bristol.
You cannot be a director of a Ltd companyt while Br so you will need to sort that out.
If the company is simply a trading style I assume it has no assets or liabilities - is that correct or does it owe paye VAY & NI?
There are a couple of ways you can conclude the company and probably better to do that before you go br.
is your wife also declaring Br

Jo: Is it possible we could start a new box/thread (whatever you call it), where we list what court we went to and answer some generic questions about it? Think it would really help people and I'm sure in no time we could build a big database.

Hi Paul,
The limited company has assets, although just office equipment and nothing of significant value. Paye & employees NI is paid monthly and is up to date. VAT is paid quarterly and is up to date. Corporation tax is due in January and is going to be a struggle as we haven't been able to put it aside on a monthly basis!
I am struggling with planning timings for BR. It takes quite a while to wind up a limited company, and as I can only operate through a limited company I won't be able to work while the company is being wound up, and as a director of a limited company I can't be unemployed and therefore cannot claim any benefits! Ideally, I need to go BR as soon as possible after stopping work, and then make the move to Ireland as soon as possible after that.
I am not trying to make this more complicated than it needs to be on purpose! I understand the reasoning behind winding up the company before going BR, I'm just not sure that it is feasible.
My wife will also be declaring herself BR.

Hi
I understand what you are trying to do and it is important to get your timeline just right to minimise the agro and facilitate an easy transition to Ireland.
The Br process should be about dignity and control so a careful plan os critical.
