A bloke from CoOp call centre said that Visa Debit cards will never be issued with a Cashminder account, where as a lady e-mailed, from Customer Services, to say that the option will be there from December 5th.

As that date has passed, and the subject has come up before, I was wondering whether anybody (Skip?) has requested a Visa Debit, and the outcome?

The T&C PDF file has been updated since December 5th, but the website still only states an "Electron" card as being available.

Hi Zamfir

When i called the Coop the other day i was assured that they WONT issue a Visa Debit to undischarged BR but the electron only.

I was also told that once discharged they may issue one to us and also it has to be checked against how the account has been run in the last few months.

So lets wait and see :-)

Hmmm, I'm not happy about this! The person I spoke to said that they didn't know anything about this, and when they spoke with their manager they were told that as it's a Cashminder account I can only have an Electron!

I told them what Jo was told, and she said that the only way you can have a debit card is to have a current account. I've got no chance of getting one of those!

I've got an address to write to, as I want to get this clarified. The terms and conditions clearly state Electron or debit card.

I'll let you know if I hear anything.

See what I mean about the confusion?

The main reason I e-mailed them was to do with more confusion (using the Electron card abroad). The website states that an Electron cannot be used to make purchases, only to withdraw cash. However, the call centre says you can use it for either:

"Hello,

Yes this is correct if the card is excepted it will be fine to use whilst
abroad. I am sorry the website still says it can only be used in cash
machines.

As of the 05/12/08 according to the terms and conditions of the Cashminder
account there will be an issue of Debit cards if you would like any further
information on the changes to the please call customer services 08457 212
212.

Thanks XXXX"

Hi Guy's
I have recieved my Co-op cashminder Card today, It is a Visa Electron card. But it does not say it's a debit card, My Barclay bank card states Debit Card
Also a Visa Electron.
Hope this helps clear things up.

Hi again
I have just read through the booklet that came with the card, and the card is discribed as an Electron Debit card.
It can be used to pay for goods in Shops where you see the Electron sign.
I think the Visa part is for using abroad.

But their terms and conditions on the website clearly state:

9. Card issue and pin
9.1 We will issue you with an electron or debit card (or each of you in the case of a joint account) to use as part of your account, in accordance with these conditions.

If they only offer an electron, why are they saying they will issue an electron OR debit card? Hopefully they'll reply to my letter to clarify this.

Lets all remember that the watchwords in life are 1) incompetence and 2) confusion. As a rule of thumb this applies to practically everything that happens in life. I have a Coop Visa Electron card which comes with my Cashminder account. It is not a debit card. My guess is that a degree of incompetence is at play here because the customer services don't know what the rules and criteria say and there is confusion, too. I would have thought that you can't have a debit card without a credit reference check. Even if discharged, how could a bankrupt get passed the credit check. The whole point of the cashminder account and visa electron card is for people who have no credit history or poor credit history. I don't see why they would dish out a debit card to a bakrupt or former bankrupt until at least several years have gone by.
