Hello everyone and Happy New Year to you all!

Now that we have gone bankrupt we are looking at ways to have cash available for emergencies etc. In the past we always had a credit card but of course don't want to go down that path again. My hubby has been looking at pre-paid credit cards and thinks this could be ideal for us. Basically we would put some money onto it every week and use it for emergencies and other purchases that don't take electron cards. Can anyone recommend a good card for this purpose?

Many thanks,

Amanda

Hi

there are a number of cards available, however I have had some good reports of Tuxedo.

Usually the cards cost around £10 each and £4.95 per month with no useage charge or no monthly fee but a high useage / refil charge.

The thing I like about Tuxedo is that you do get a pay in book to use at Barclays, you can have two cards on the one account ( i.e. 1 monthly fee) and they do accept cheque deposits ( although they do charge for this)

Thanks Paul

I will look into that card and see if it's what we are after.

Cheers,

Amanda

Hi Amanda

I use the Gold Pre Paid card and its been brilliant. I can top up at some allocated shops, the post office and online banking via standing order.

I have had mine 3 months now and would not be without it.

Here is a link to the info on the one i have but in my blog i have more info on prepaid cards:

http://www.mycashplus.co.uk/default.aspx

They dont take long to come in and i have found mine invaluable, you can only spend what you put on there and also i can now do my shopping with tesco's online as they dont accept electron cards.

Best of luck

Jo

PayPal do a good prepaid card with a £4.95 issue fee and no charges for general use (percentage fee charged for cash) or for topping up if you top it up from a PayPal account. You have to be organised enough to transfer money from your bank account to PayPal in time to top the card up though.

Downsides - 1 card only lasts 2 years, there's a limit on how much you can load per month and there's a limit on how much you can load in any 12 month period.

Still looks good as an emergency cash reserve though - although if RBS go under, you do lose any balance on the card because it's not covered like a normal bank account would be.
