I woke up this morning to find the usual array of electronic gadgets next to my bed hauntingly blank and devoid of all signs of life; 'Hmm, the electric has gone off' I thought. So I wandered downstairs into the garage to flick the switch back on, only to find that all of the switches were exactly as they should be!
'Aaagh, they have cut me off already, after only 1 month of not paying my creditors!', I can feel that swell of anxiety quickly rising in my chest, the fluttering butterflies with teeth gnawing at my insides, and then, just as quickly, the feeling subsides as common sense and coherent reasoning take control and I remeber that I am still paying my utilities.
A quick stroll down the street confirms that either every house in the area is either preparing for BR and not paying their utility bills, or more realistically, there is a power outage.
Relax, and .... breate :)
Isn't it strange that panic is a far quicker emotion than logic and common sense.
I hope this tale makes you smile, but I also hope it suggests that, regardless of how we feel during the stresses of BR, every event isn't ALWAYS the worst case as we might imagine.

When I started receiving the letters threatening a visit from Mike Tyson, I used to panic everytime the doorbell rung or a car pulled up on nearby.
I found it ironic that the most in-efficient creditor (AMEX), was the most understanding through the whole ordeal. |

Hi Sooo Scared
Its normal to feel like that, it is one of the hardest things that we have to do and yes i must admit i felt like the fingers were pointing or the curtains were twitching at the start, but hey i just think to myself that i have done something have they.
It will all be ok, you have to be strong, you need to have your family and friends to support you too. Some may not like it, but at the end of the day they are not you. There is this forum with us guys and gals to help you, i know that it may feel strange writing to a load of people that you dont even know but in all honesty that is the better way as we only know what you tell us and no way will we ever judge you.
Sometimes we may answer a question and it may be to the point but there is not good making things out to be all rosy when in all reality it may not be.
We are a big family that has grown in the last 6 months and it has become a safe haven for many, including myself, i forget sometimes that i am a bankrupt still because i help others.
You take care and forget about the others outside your world, look after #1

I remember thinking all the neighbours were discussing us when we were in dire straits financially - wondering what they'd make of the new car disappearing from the drive to be replaced by an older one, or the house being left empty (we gave the keys back voluntarily), or the repeat visits from the strange man at all hours! (Sorry Paul - in retrospect you probably didn't look at all dodgy). Now I couldn't care less - if they were talking, then I feel sorry for them not having anything better to do or discuss.
We're now into our second month of bankruptcy, settled into a rented house which is far better than the one we've left and for the first time in our lives, looking forward to the future we're planning for our 2 children.
I was so scared about it all (name in the paper and all the rest of it) and it's turned out to be a dream come true instead of a nightmare - no longer jumping when the phone rings, or lying to my 2 year old about who's calling, or dreading the post arriving.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! |
