My husband and I are really struggling with trying to raise the double BR fee we need, thought I would get a discount as Im on jobseekers, but aparantly that only applies to income-based, not contributuin based. It seems an awful amount to try to get hold of, £950, at the moment we have about £500, I am selling everything I can on e-bay, and am waiting for my health-in-pregnancy grant of £190 to put towards it. We stopped paying our unsecured creditors at xmas so we are now getting pressure from them...some have been great as we have told them our intentions, but HSBC especially are being very persistant. My husband is stressing as he didnt want his work to know about the BR and if we cant manage to do it in March, he will get a zero tax code...is this right?
Any advice would be great, have tried hundreds of times to get throught to the CAB but it just plays a message saying they are too busy to answer the call.
I only have 12 weeks until my baby is due and I need to get things for her, but every spare penny is going towards the fee. Really could do without this stress!!!

Hi

just a thought - is there any special reason why you need to go to court and go Br at the same time?

why don't you have Hubby go br in March then you can go as soon as you have the balance of the fees.

that way the tax code won't change for him.

You could call in person to your local CAB and speak to them face to face to book an appointment. There are schems operated through the CAB via various utility providers where a voucher can be issued to pay your petition costs, but you need to speak to the CAB to look into this. Also may i ask what you own debt level is I only ask as if either of you has debts under £15K from 6th April you could apply for a Debt Relief Order which will only cost £90 (plus you can pay in installments) to qualify you must rent your home or live with family -you cannot own a home on mortgage regardless whether negative equity - but if your debts were below £15k this may be a better solution for you - However, you have to do this through your CAB - go to the office and make an appointment, getting through on the phone is difficult

Thank-you for your replies...Melanie, dont think the debt relief is right for us as we do own our own home and we are in neg. equity so trying to hold on to it, seems a good scheme though.
As to both going BR together, well I just supposed we had to do it that way, the major debt we have is around £24K with HSBC and is a joint loan, the rest is mainly in my name, about £6K on credit cards. Does this make any difference? Thanks again. xx

I'm with Paul :) Sort out your husband first, and then look after yourself. Your baby is far more important. If your debt is 'only' 6k then it may be treated differently with the new stuff coming in about owing less than 15k. Can't remember exactly - but one of the regulars will be able to explain it :)
