I was made bankrupt feb 2008 and discharged sept 2008 although my official receiver did not have a problem with me having a bank account my bank closed my account and I have not been able to get one since, only a savings account. all i want is one with direct debits on as i am finding this a problem. do you have any advice as to what i can do, i have tried all of the banks and they have refused me i think it is because a lot of my debt was with banks. thanks

Hi Tracey and welcome to the forum.

Have you tried the Co-op Cashminder account? That is the most bankruptcy friendly account. You can't apply online, only on the phone or in a branch, but you get a Visa Electron card, direct debits and internet banking.

Northern Rock also say on their website that they will give anyone over 13 (I think) a bank account, so that could be worth a try.

Good luck x

thanks for your reply. i have tried the co-op and they said no but i had already tried them before i went bankrupt so that may have been why. barclays said no as well which really annoyed me because they are not supposed to do credit checks on their basic account but did. i will try northern rock.

Are you on the electoral register at your current address? If not this could be the reason the Co-op said no.

Let us know how you get on if you try NR x
