I have a question re applying for housing benefit as a BR.
After I go BR I'll be made redundant and will need to go on housing benefit. I've heard that you only get your first housing benefit payment 3 months after you apply for it. This will be fine if I could keep my redundancy payment but, as I'll be BR, the trustees will take that leaving me nothing to tide me over for those 3 months.
Are there any BRs out there who have applied for housing benefit after being made redundant? |

Hi
just a thought, why don't you do things in a diferent order.
i.e. wait until you are made redundant, use your redundance to pay for oourt fees etc, apply for housing benefit and then go br, - pay the balance to or

Hi
to safeguard your position I would seriously consider Paul's suggestion.
Your benefit office should be ashamed that applications take that long to process. I know my local office take 3 - 4 weeks to process a claim.

when we applied for housing benefit, it took a matter of a few days to sort out - nowhere near 4 months. if you look on your local council's website it will have more information on there. i think the rules have changed now and they HAVE to process and action all application forms within 10 working days. you can also apply to have it backdated but i'm not sure of the timescales of this. again you would be wise to check your local council's website or give them a call. on our local councils website you can do a calculator thing which details how much you are eligble for and then also apply online. which is what we did and then went to the council offices armed with the documentation they required as proof of our claim.
good luck. also take note of what Paul says, he is a genious in his field (I know I have had personal dealings with him assisting me in my own personal bankruptcy).
Soon to be bankrupt. Looking forward to a new start. Baby number 2 due 3rd June 2009.

Hi qwerty & All. xX
Im not an expert but can tell you... When i were made homeless... (dec 4 08... Trustee executed the warrant... Changed locks etc... I needed help from the local authority) I applied for housing benefit as id took a private house to rent... It says on the forms you fill out they do a fast track... (approx 10 days) But being in BR, owning ya own property, n more... Its a lot more complicated than that... (The info they ask for is unreal) My housing form was put into the office on the 8 december 08. I was awarded it 3 weeks ago... !!!
My Regards lil Shaza. xX

Do go and speak to your local council - it may not be as worrying as you think. We lost our jobs and home when our business failed and moved into private rented accommodation a couple of months ago. We went feeling very embarrassed to the local council office to apply for housing benefit and it was absolutely fine - they were pleasant, friendly and helpful. We filled in the form right away and the first payment arrived quite quickly - probably within ten days. The first couple of payments came by cheque in the post. After that it was paid straight into the bank. (And now we're not receiving it any more because I got a job yay!) |
