Hi all

Just thought i would let you know that i officially went bankrupt at 10:23am this morning!! Whoo hoo!

I arrived at the courts at 9:15am for a 9:30am appointment, and was seen pretty much straight away. The clerk looked through my SOA and petition of bankruptcy and got me to sign all three copies. I then sweared on the bible and couldnt pronounce one of the words (affidavte) which the clerk lauged at.

I then was asked to go and wait downstairs while she completed some paperwork. I was waiting for about 10 minutes when she came down and told me i should see the judge shortly. 45 minutes later i was called into the hearing room.

There was a lady judge who asked me if i understood the seriousness of what i was doing, whether i had taken advice especially regarding my job as i am a social worker. I said i had and she then declared me bankrupt at 10:23am. (my bum hardly touched the chair as i was in and out of the room within about 2 minutes).

I then had to return upstairs where they phoned the OR deptartment and left me to speak with the clerk. She asked me some questions such as my date of birth, phone numbers, any assests e.g. car and if i have a bank account for my salary in which i replied yes and gave her the details.

She put me on hold while she tried to make me an appt with the OR but had to phone me back as a problem with the system. My appt is on the 1st June at 3:00pm!

I asked her if i could keep my car, however, she was unable to say and advised me to ask the OR on the 1st June. I also asked if my current bank account will be frozen and she repleid that it is up to the bank itself but said if there were any problems to phone her.

I also asked about my name appearing in the newspaper, as i am a social worker and obviously dont want to advertise my home address. She informed me that things have changed and you no longer get printed in the local paper, but instead get printed in the london gazette (business newspaper) to my relief!!

I was free to go at 11:00am and went straight to the pub for a drink lol.

Everyone was lovely and not at all judgemental.

Heres to a debt free life.

Well done jelojo, it's good news about your name not being in the local paper. There have been reports that this no longer happens so it will be interesting to see if mine is in the paper soon.

The OR interview so quickly after being declared BR is also good as you can get the whole process out of the way. The car should be fine provided you need it for work and it is worth less than £2k.

Just to follow-up on the bank account; when are you paid? There is another thread a little further down where someone has had their account frozen and they are having a lot of trouble getting it unfrozen (defrosted?? ) so it might be an idea to draw out any available cash in case there are problems.

Is it account a basic account as this is normally all the ORs will allow so if not you might want to open a Co-op Cashminder account in the meantime just in case there are problems with your current account.

hiya

My car is only worth about £1500 and i do need for work. so hopefully wont be a problem

In regards to my bank account, I opened it when i started planning to go bankrupt and told the bank so and they informed me that there shouldnt be aproblem, it is a basic account with Lloyds TSB. I cant get a cash minder account with the co op as they are one of my creditors unfortuantly.

It is such a relief to know that my OR interview is in less than two weeks, as you said it makes the whole process quicker and the sooner i can relax!

Hope yours goes ok.

From experiance Lloyds will not want your business and will freeze your account.Make sure you have no money in the account or it will be a pain to get hold of.

The other bankrupt friendly account is the Barclays Cash account.

The only problem with barclays is i have a barclaycard, which has gone through the bankruptcy, so again dont think i could have that.

I'll take the money out and see what happens. Ive only just been paid on the 15th so got another month before i have to worr about that so thats one thing anyway!

Glad it went well for you. I did the deed myself yesterday. It shouldn't have any implications on your career in social work, have you heard anything to the contrary (i.e. it will create a problem)?

Barclays will accept you even if you have gone bankrupt owing money to them I applied in branch and was turned down, so I challanged it and was given an account, have just upgraded to the connect card.

Hi there

Thanks for all the great advice again!

The CAB were the first people to panic me about my career, however, i have spoekn withthe GSCC (governing body of social work)and they informed meit would not affect my registration and i have also spoken with my managr and she hasnt mentioned it. So i dont think it will be a problem. (did panic a little this morning when judge said that though as i thought do you know something i dont, but didnt want to tell her that otherwise she may have told me to go away and find out and then come back).
