I need to apply for the above with the co-op, but the troubleis the Co-Operative Bank are one of my creditors and will be listed on the BR when I go to court. What do I say to the customer services department when I ring up and ask for an account? Also, if they are one of my creditors and I start having my salary paid into an account with them, can they 'take' money form the account seeing as I 'owe them'. I can't understand how they'regoing to give me an account when I'm in debt to them? Please advise.

Hi zchr1

there is another option for a bank account if you are worried that Coop will take money off of you. That option is Think Banking.

You can also try Barclays cash card account just tell them you are applying for BR when you go to open the account or you will be refused as they try the current account option 1st.

With Think banking you pay an initial start up fee, taken from your first deposit, of £25 and a monthly fee of £12.50, these prices are increased by £5 if you opt for a second card. These fees put it in line with some of the pre-paid credit cards you can obtain ie Tuxedo card.

I was refused both the Barclays cash card and the Coop cashminder accounts and have opted for the Think bank account untill I am in a position to get one of the other two accounts mentioned.

As for trying for the Coop, wait for one of the experts to advise you ther before you decide wht to do.

Hope my advice helps you somewhere along the lines.

I have read about people being able to open a Cashminder account after they have been made BR even though the Co-op was one of their creditors so it might be worth talking to them.

Tomorrow is a mystery, yesterday is history, today is the present, a gift to make the most of.

Yes give it a go! You can only ask. I am sure they can't take money from you once you are BR.......an expert will hopefully confirm that! Not sure whether they could before you go BR though???

well....no experts have confirmed anything as of yet. But thank you Storm, because today I opened a Think Banking account, and although there's a monthly fee to pay,it all seems like a life saver.

No probs zchr1

I have been told on here to stay with Think banking untill I have been declared BR then apply for Barclays or Coop but to be honest with you I will stay with Think Banking untill I am in a better financial position and then review my situation.

I'm glad tho that you have managed to get a bank account sorted and got over one hurdle.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do from here on.

Hi there
you may well find that the COOP acount is refused because of the prior debt.

Think banking are also good but they do charge a monthly fee.
