Going BR in a couple of weeks and unsure of several things. My other half has decided to use his considerable linguistic skills and start trying to get work as a freelance interpreter. He will need his car to get around, although it is not expensive we want to make sure that he is properly registered! Should we fill in the IR notice of self employment yet? If so when should we send it? Will this have an impact on our benefits (jobseekers allowance, child tax credit, child benefit, housing and council tax benefit) He will probably earn very little for the first 6 months or so and we are worried that we will not manage without any cash. I am looking for a part time job before we go BR so that I can keep my car and use it for ferrying the Kid's around as well.
On benefits you are allowed by law to work for 16 hours a week although you must declare the amount you earn and also you are allowed to earn an extra £10 on top of your benefit so if you work 16 hours for £20 they only take £10 into consideration (benefits agency) As for the housing benefits and council tax you have to inform them of the change and the same for Child Tax Credits. Child beneft doesn't get affected.
As for the car if you are deciding on the BR route then it will only be taken into consideration if it is valued between £2000 - £2500.
