I have had a basic Nationwide account for a number of years and used it during my BR. I was dicharged last March. I pay into the NW account over £3,000 per month every month so not unreasonably I asked for a Debit Card so that I could acces MY MONEY! I did not want credit just the ability to spend my own. Despite keeping the account impeccabley, I was told I could not have one. The Assistant had the cheek to tell me that I may try to draw more than I had in the account. In effect I was an ex-bankrupt I could not be trusted, I must be dishonest. I tried to explain that unlike the banking institutions in this company, I have not had the Government to bail me out and that my Bankruptcy was caused by an unfaithfull alcoholic wife who cleaned me out leaving me for another man and leaving me to clear up her mess Nationwide NOT INTERESTED.

I approched the NAT West but as I had owed them nearly £50k in Bankruptcy I though I had no chance How wrong was I. They pointed out that if trends continue, around 25~ 30% of the public will go through some form of insolvency by 2030. They welcomed me with open arms and I now have a basic "Step" account with a Debit Card and full range of banking services. I have been told in writing that if I keep the account in good order for 2 years I will qualify for an upgrade. The Nationwide told me 6 years!

Nat West then explained that AS AN EX-Bankrupt I have no debts and because I am comfortably employed earning a good wage, I am actually a good risk.

So come on Banks! Please consider each case on merit not think every ex Bankrupt is a crook! If that is the case the Directors of Halifax, Lloyds TSB, RBS etc are all crooks

That's good news, and good for Nat West. I used to bank with them and I was happy with them at the time. I'm with the Co-op now and plan to stick with them, but it's good to know that Nat West is another option.

Well Done,

The RBS Group seem to be becoming more aware of the current financial climate, it is a shame that other banks wont do the same, and insist on waiting 6 or 7 years to deal with a customer again.

I'm sure that other banks will start to change their tune in the future with more and more people becoming insolvent. If they want people's business then they may not have a choice but it's good to hear that banks other than the Co-op and Think banking are becoming more BR friendly.

I spoke to HSBC the other month and they said that they now accept undischarged bankrupts on a case by case basis

I'd rather keep my money under the mattress than use HSBC!

Hi

Completely agree with you about HSBC Skippyy their only good point was when I banked with them they used Real time systems so when you used your Switch card it deducted it from internet banking immediately, but they were really nasty with me over my credit card debt

Hi,
I have found NatWest Step account great for all my banking needs. Debit card. No overdraft but don't want one, no cheque book but don't want one (although it is quite funny that Moonbeevers suggested main route of payment is by cheque????). I opened my Natwest account just prior to BR when I was contemplating an IVA. Never had any problems so far, and I would therefore certainly recommend them.

Moon Beaver have some very strange ideas!

I've never had anything to do with HSBC personally, but I can't forgive them for making my uncle's life difficult when he was terminally ill - he had no debts but they made it very difficult to have the account in his wife's sole name. They changed their account to Nationwide rather than deal with them.

I wouldn't touch HSBC with a ten foot barge pole!

They were one of our creditors and made our lives hell, even got us to remortgage so that we could pay them off - not that we did though!

The glimmer gets brighter all the time
