It is possible that a vindictive HMRC will make me bankrupt. What will happen to our house? It is in my name (we bought the house jointly but as she is an American Citizen the broker thought it would be easier to obtain a mortgage in my name only) but my wife has a registered Home Rights Notice. It is on a mortgage (interest only) with no current method of redeeming at the moment. It is at best valued at current amount owed to the building society and at worst negative equity.

HMRC are the biggest petitioner of bankruptcies. Im not sure that they would see it as vindictive, just encouraging people to pay their tax

Got to say that HMRC are generally reliable and consistent. This is very useful when dealing with them. They are not a debt collection agency so do not lie, mislead, or lead you up the garden path.

Their aim is:-

1. get paid now
2. agree a reasonable payment plan ( reasonable to them)
3. make you Br.

How much to you owe to them
