My partner was discharged from Bankruptcy about 9 months ago now and we have been looking into getting her a bog-standard, basic and free bank account with one of the big high street banks, but they just don't want to know and won't explain why they can't give one to her. Can you give us any advise or information on what we should or which bank/building society would be best to approach for a new bank account?

Hi Ian.23

Most main High Street banks cater for those people who hav e been in bankruptcy although it appears that there are no guidelines to whom they accepy and whom they don't. Have you tried our old friends at the Cooperative Bank. They are usually pretty good and have a Cashminder account for those people who have been through bankruptcy.
Failing that, there are some prepaid bank accounts which are supposedly designed to help repair your credit rating. Secure Trust Bank is apparently very well respected.

Hope this helps.

Barclays also offer a basic bank account that is BR friendly.

Only when the last tree has died, the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.

Last IPA payment made on 28th June 2010 and I'm now looking forward to getting married in September 2012 - I'm proof that you can go BR and come out the other side.

Personally I would try the free ones first rather than the paid accounts.
