Hi,

I had to declare myself bankrupt in March 2005 for £33,000 in personal debts. The bankruptcy lasted the full 12 months. I was self employed at the time as a tiler.

I received a tax rebate for the tax year 2005/6 for £800 which went straight to the OR. However after being discharged in March 2006 I then received a tax rebate for £780 for the year 2006/7.

I received the letter on Feb 2008 but up until now did not receive any of the money back into my account. I phoned up the tax office today to see what was going on with this and they said the money was paid straight to the OR again.

Is this correct or should I have received the payment as I was discharged in March 2006?

Any help much appreciated!

Hi

If the rebate covered the period from April 2006 to April 2007 then you should have received that money. Write to the OR and request the money back.

Hi,

Thanks Suzanne, I thought this was the case. Do I just write and give them my details of the amount owned, NI number and address?

Will this be enough or do I have to send them bank details or can I just request a cheque?

Sorry for the other questions but I might aswell try and get it right first time so it doesn't have to drag on any longer!

Cheers

Ian

You need to write to the Official Receiver quoting your court reference, and explain that they have received £XX which was due to you as a tax rebate for a period after your discharge. They will look into it and send you a cheque.
