Hi
I intend to file for bankruptcy very soon. Can you please tell my what I should do about my existing direct debits on my bank account (gas, electric, insurances, etc)? I'm worried about payments lapsing when my bank account is frozen. Can I make arrangements to pay these any other way before I file for bankruptcy? Thank you.

Hi

You can arrange to pay these via direct card payment from a prepaid card. Alternatively you could open a bank account with a bankruptcy friendly bank such as Coop and Barclays, or the managed services such as Thinkbanking and OneBanking (OneBanking dont allow Direct Debits) this way they account will remain open after the bankruptcy.

Some banks take longer than others to close or freeze accounts too, but if you have debts with your current bank or its affiliates then I would move.

Hi Stu

Thank you for your reply. Would I be able to open a 'bankruptcy friendly' account at say Barclays, before I go bankrupt, and then keep it afterwards, or would that get frozen too? Also would I need to tell Barclays I am going bankrupt when I open the account? I'm wondering if I could do this and transfer direct debits beforehand.

Hi

I spoke to Barlcays when I wanted an account with them, and they said the offer two accounts of basic nature, the cash card only and the debit card basic account, however if you are going bankrupt you can only have the basic cash card account.

They told me that you can open that account prior to bankruptcy and they wont freeze it as it is designed specifically for bankrupts.

You have to go into branch now to open an account, they do allow postal for the application however they do recommend you go into branch. You need to take your passport, driving licence and a bill.

I didnt go for the account as I have debts with Barclaycard and they advised against it to be on the safe side.

Hope that helps

Hi Hardygirls

Welcome

You would be better really to apply to the Coop as they seem to be the best around for pre bankruptcy and post bankruptcy.

You can set up all dd's and so's and also you get online access and an electron card.

LOL

Hi Jo

Thanks for your reply! I don't think the Co-op would give me a bank account, as I owe them money on a credit card!

Bear in mind that it is in the Bankers Code that everyone, irrespective of their credit status, is entitled to at least a basic bank account.

If you are unsure, take all your ID for a day in the high street ... you will get an account from someone (as long as you didn't owe them money when you went BR).
