Have you tried getting an account with the Co-op?
Why are you paying £17 a month for the account - I thought it was about £12 a month?

Hi Sharkattack
Have you tried opening a basic bank account with the co op, it's free. Why should you need to pay for a bank account especially when you are bankrupt.

Hi
Yes Thinkbanking are Bankruptcy friendly, they dont charge for bounced payments and dont have the three strikes and your out motto like coop they also give you a masestro card that is a maestro card not a dressed up on like coops visa debit which is still electron.
Thinkbanking are evolving and I believe they are going to be introducing a "C" Account which is a savings account by December.
I assmue your paying £17.50 a month instead of the £12.50 a month as its a joint account?
The OR Office may look faavourable on your thinkbanking account and give you an allowance for it, like I was as it shows that you are willing to take steps to manage money better.
Ive gone back to Thinkbanking as they are far better in my mind than coop, I cant live with the three strikes your out, 6 years to wait for a proper debit card not a dressed up on and same for a savings acount, and thinkbanking gives you a named money manager too.
Good luck with the bankruptcy, if you need further advice or anything else please keep on posting

When I enquired about think banking they told me that I would have to deposit a certain amount each month. This would not have been possible because I am self-employed and my salary is never the same every month.
My Visa debit electron works fine for me and I have never been refused payment with it. I am in more control with money after my bankruptcy, and always make sure there is enough money in my account to pay direct debits etc.
I personally would not pay for a bank account when the co-op account seems to work fine for me.

Hi
Everyone has different experiences with Banks, Thinkbanking have beeng good with me, yes i have had some teething problem with them and some problems with them in the past but they are ok. I feel more assured that I have got a debit card that works, a named money manager (Hannah) and I dont have the three strikes and your out over my head, nor will I gbe treated as the lowest of the low as i was bankrupt and can only have a basic account no savings accounts

I have the Barclays basic account, it now comes with a debit card (its great shopping online again) and I have direct debits on it. The only thing it does not have is a cheque book or an overdraft, something I never want ever again |

Like Debtrider I've never had a problem with my Visa Electron, and to be honest I don't see how managed accounts are helping to manage your accounts better - you can't go overdrawn, but having someone managing your money is not teaching you to manage your own money.

Hi Skippy you can go verdrawn with the coop, making it unauthorised, because they take upto a week to update your balance it is really easy to use the "debit" card and then forgot and transfer money elsewhere, they also operate the three strikes and your out.
Some of us ned our hands holding with money from time to time too and Thinkbanking is good for that

If you budget correctly in the first place, then you should not go overdrawn at all.
I make sure that there is enough money in my bank account to cover all my DD's etc.
I have no problems.
And I don't pay for the priviledge.

Fair comment Jan,
except what happens if a card transaction goes through twice and leads to a DDI or SOI Failure incurring charges Or what happens if a DDI takes more than it should at an Earlier date than you have money available again incurring charges or what if you arent paid in time to reach your outgoings again you will incur charges
These problems are all dealt with, with thinkbanking and you dont geet any three strikes and your out, or any more charges than there maintenance fee

I know when my DDs will be taken out, and how much. If too much is taken, or it's taken on the wrong date it's covered by the DD guarantee and not part of the 3 strikes rule.
The Co-op has never taken a week to update my online banking, it's usually 2 or 3 days. Every time I use the card I put it on a spreadsheet so I know exactly how much I've got in my account.
I wouldn't feel as if I was standing on my own two feet if I was using a managed account, and best of all I don't pay anything!

I'm with Nationwide and my banking is updated as it happens. I like to have control of my budget.
I know to the last penny and when my DD's go out. I check my online balance frequently.
I love being able to budget now and all by myself as well!

I belive the only 2 banks for someone not yet discharged from their bankruptcy is the Co op Bank and Barclay's Bank. With Barclays you get a Visa debit card but if you are not discharged you cannot have their online banking I have a decent account with Yorkshire Bank, although this is for folk discharged, this comes with a proper Maestro card and good internet banking. rosa |

You can use accounts such as Thinkbanking, but they come with a monthly charge, as opposed to the Co-op, which doesn't.

Hi
Barclays now offer internet banking for all, Nationwide, HSBC and the RBS Group are now starting to accept applications on a case by case basis
